Violin Secrets

Hello...I just wanted to ask Black Violin a few questions about playing the violin.  First, what are some things you think I or any other violinist could do to improve my or their playing.  Second, its really hard for me to play accurately way up in 5th position and higher on the E string, and I was wondering if you had some tips on that.  Third, who do you think I could start looking into to try and start a career in playing the violin.  Ive always wanted to have a musical career and now I know that I want to play my violin.

Hello there!

Thanks for joining the forum.

Well it would not be possible to discuss violin in it's entirety, it's a lifelong art form, but I could give you some hints and points which might help you out.

About improving your skill - the main thing about it is practicing daily if possible, playing scales, arpeggios and studies, very slowly with a thought behind each note.
The best way to practice is utilizing a metronome.
You have to eat healthy, never right before playing and you have to be well rested (8-10 hours every night).

The positions take time to learn. The main goal there is to relax your hand while your thumb does all the work of moving up and down the violin neck. The rest of the hand just follows the thumb.
Watch out for the intonation (replace the strings at least once every 3 months)...

To start your career you at least need to have a quality recording showcasing your talents.
You need to start performing live.
It takes a very long time to achieve anything.
Unless you get real lucky - there's no easy way into career in music.
If you have anymore specific questions - I'll be happy to answer them all.
Take care.

I'd especially have to agree with Black Violin on the practicing the scales/arpeggios slowly with a metronome. When you practice slowly, you're developing your muscle memory. It helps give you the ability to play instictively. As odd as it sounds, working on techincal skills gives you more freedom to experience your music on an emotional level.
Just my opinion. I'm not a violinist. Wink
